Banner Exchange Services

Banner exchanges provide a great source of free advertising. How do they work? Typically, you register for their service and place their HTML code on your website to display banners. Each time your site displays one of their banners, you earn a credit. When you have enough credits, your banner is displayed on another site using the service. The number of credits needed to display a banner varies from network to network. This number is called the ratio. If you need to display a banner 2 times to have your banner displayed 1 time, the ratio would be 2:1. Most services track views and clicks for your banners. Some also offer targeting that display your banners on more pertinent sites which improves click-through.

Banner Ad Strategies

Keep the message simple. The banner should have a single central idea: a product or service you are selling or an advantage of your business or product. What do you want the viewer to do when they see your ad? View and Purchase a product? Sign-up for your mailing list? Visit a specific page on your website? Recognize your brand? Are you offering something for free as an incentive?

Consider what type of banner suits your needs. Banner ads can be static or animated. Animated banners tend to get higher click-through rates (CTR). Animated banners may tell a story and lead viewers through your message, but static banners convey your message more quickly. Animated banners may attract attention, but they may not appeal to a more professional audience. If the ad does have animation, fewer frames tend to perform better than more frames. Too much animation can be gaudy and unappealing and feel intrusive.

The position of the banner ad on the page can be a huge factor in its effectiveness. In general, ads placed in the upper left below the navigation bar and near main content perform better than ads placed on the right column or near the bottom of the page.

The HOT areas on the webpage are: left column below the navigation bar, main center column below navigation bar above content, below content, and within content to the top and left.

The WARM areas on the webpage are: header above the navigation bar to the left and center, lower left column below the navigation bar, upper right column below the navigation bar, and main center column below the navigation bar within content to the right and bottom.

Call to Action: Once you have their attention, the banner should ask the viewer to do something: Click Here, Learn More, Buy Now. This gives them the additional incentive they may need to click your ad for further information. If you want them to do something, you need to tell them what that is.
